SPECIAL PROJECTS UNIT

The Special Projects Unit implements several projects to increase the production of non-traditional crops and reduce food importation while promoting climate-resilient agriculture technology to mitigate extreme weather conditions. Projects undertaken by the Unit include:

Utilizing various designs of hydroponic systems (VNFT, HNFT, DFT, DWC, DBS) to cultivate leafy vegetable crops while simultaneously using the facility to conduct training for schools and farmers’ groups.

Promote the propagation of Brazilian Green Dwarf Nuts by supplying seedlings to key stakeholders (farmers) for seed nuts production and subsequent expansion of coconut production and value-added products.

Revitalize Guyana’s cocoa/coffee industry by establishing a cocoa/coffee nursery and multiplying and expanding new germplasm from Costa Rica.

Design and manage open field trials to commercialize non-traditional crops such as onion and berries.

Provide support (make seed materials available where necessary) and guidance to increase spice production and facilitate processing, supporting the value-added chain and reducing imports.

Sourcing new germplasms to enhance cut flower production at NAREI while developing marketing skills and techniques for the successful propagation and production of cut flowers based on local demand.

Construct shade houses for schools and farmers’ groups and provide training to encourage the adoption of climate-smart and sustainable agricultural practices in Guyana.

Conducting trials to improve yield and production efficiency of corn and soybean.
