Shade House Update – 2023

The Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has embarked on a program advocating for farmers, entrepreneurs, and graduates in the field of agriculture to adapt Protected Agriculture since the adverse effects of climate change are threatening world food security

It is in this regard that the Government of Guyana adapted a proactive approach to lead the drive through the 25 by 2025 Vision to reduce the food import bill and to ensure there is adequate food security within the region. Guyana has the resources and fertile land to reclaim its position as the “food basket” of the Caribbean and with appropriate investment, technology and climate smart practices this objective can be achieved.

The Ministry of Agriculture through the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute has been leading the drive towards ensuring the necessary support is provided to farmers, schools, farmers’ groups, religious organizations, and Non-Governmental Organisations. The primary focus is to provide shade houses since initial cost to establish is the major disadvantage. Tools and equipment, drip and sprinkler irrigation system, training and technical support are also provided to ensure the objectives are realised.

Farmers benefitting from 61.9 % of the shade houses constructed during the year. Youths will continue to be the target beneficiaries, and with the recent launching of the Hydroponics Projects, it is envisaged that more people, particularly young men, and women, will grasp the opportunity to become actively involved and become entrepreneurs not only in food production but also in Agro-processing.
